From seeing to creating, from feeling to healing, The Art Outreach Society strives to promote art, its education and its many facets

Interview by Maria John    Words by Fathima Abdul Kader    Photographs from The Art Outreach Society

For far too long, art has been confined to galleries and installation spaces. It has been considered elitist, shown as something only “artistic” minds can comprehend, but who is to say what the word means. The vision of The Art Outreach Society (TAOS), which is a non-profit organization founded in Kochi, is to rewire the public’s approach towards art and try to promote it as a tool for individual and social change.

TAOS was formed by Tanya Abraham, a writer and the Creative Director of Kashi Art Gallery. It evolved from her love for the arts and the recognition of its power to change lives, and aims to enrich, heal and help create public advancement, both at the individual and community level. Rather than being mere spectators, they prompt people to create art. The team behind TAOS also includes Sajitha Madathil, who is the deputy secretary of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, is an active theatre artist, writer, and academician and is a prominent figure in the Malayalam theatre and feminist discourse.FWD Life ART UNBOUND (2)

Building Blocks

Art is linked to everything that we would want for the young generation – the capability for educational, social and emotional development. The Guggenheim museum visitor studies in 2010 confirmed that through long term inculcation of art, people become more emotionally invested in academics, improve literacy skills, become more logical and have better problem solving skills. The only way for art to realize its true potential at healing the mind, body and community is by increasing its accessibility. Children are more susceptible to take in art and all that it has to offer. Artistic influences lay down the groundwork for creating a culturally aware society.

TAOS offers the children an arena to widen the range of their creative intellect. They achieve this through activities held in schools across all strata of society as well as in clubs around the city. General art education is the need of the hour and the primary focus of TAOS. Workshops like puppet theatre, papier mâché, mask making and more promote art education in particular. TAOS aims for the workshops to be the initial step for schools to incorporate an art curriculum, which in turn will help invoke a sense of familiarity with creative thinking in the children and finding an outlet through such pursuits.FWD Life ART UNBOUND (4)

Note the growth

While activities like Artist Talk promote art appreciation, those like Creative Movement Therapy and Art Expressive Therapy help address emotional turmoil. Through these sessions, TAOS has helped many children and women address their personal issues. Even without truly opening the lid on them, emotions that were suppressed can be addressed through artistic avenues. The exercises do not restrict the attendees to opt for a particular form for expression.

The human brain works in inscrutable ways and a prompt such as “choose colors related to happiness”, may have unexpected responses. The therapists have come across children who associate black with happiness and red with sadness. It has helped many attendees deal with personal demons and assisted in finding the cause for distresses previously unrecognized and address issues that limited relationship building. For those suffering chronic conditions, art therapy helps enhance the psychosocial treatment and reduce depression and fatigue levels. It also helps reduce anxiety and stress reactions and helps stimulate cognitive functions in older patients of dementia and Parkinson’s Disease.

Heal the World

Involving communities in the creation of art is an adept approach in fostering awareness among the public about art and its effects. Artists are much more than what they are portrayed as and TAOS attempts to elevate their role as public intellectuals who help give voice to the public and their causes. TAOS organizes art exhibitions with artworks from children to reach out and build a sense of community. Every story has a bigger picture, and they hope to do all that they can to bring about positive public change. Art possesses unrivalled social value and is an effective community builder. Public art projects involve more people in the creation and the experience.
