The Italian Job with Tovino Thomas

There are guns, handcuffs and there are mean eyes of a powerful don, Tovino is all in for a shootout of ideas in this month’s interview.

He has an Italian sounding name and has also apparently been told by a director that he looks firangi, someone he once approached for a role. No, it was no compliment. It was only an observation about why someone with a name like Tovino Thomas and European good looks could not fare well in the Malayalam industry. Well, you know what, that observation should shock the living light out of us. Whoa, did we just let a white man with an Italian sounding name pull off a Perumparambil Appu on us? With moist eyes, didn’t we applaud his portrayal of that badass footballer with a big heart in Ennu Ninte Moideen. Maybe we could hide behind the fact that we Indians have
always been proud of our Italian ties. Ok, let us drop the whole Italian thing. If you have not figured out by now, Tovino Thomas’ connections to Italy or another country for that matter is a joke. But he did convince us that he could pull off the mafia look and with his chiseled jaws and acute eyes, evil looked good. He is a thoroughbred Malayali, raised near Iranjallakudda, somewhere in the innards of Thrissur. So what’s with the name we wonder,

“ Appa wanted an unusual name and somehow found Tovino. I have asked him how, but he doesn’t seem to remember.” An unusual name is an asset; aren’t there scores of actors who were rechristened as they stepped into the industry including that great actor with an ordinary name- Shivaji Rao Gaekwad? So when did we notice Tovino Thomas then? Definitely his portrayal of the cocky- good looking- evil politician in Martin Prakat’s ABCD. Not only did he impress us with his looks, we also went “This dude can act!” So what was the storyline before the movie, the struggle period, we wanted to know. “As someone with no contacts within the industry, I had to chalk my own path, build a customized strategy to plow my way into the industry. Yes, there was a struggle period; most people I approached for roles would think ‘another decent looking chap, with a physique who wants to give movies a shot because he thinks that’s all there is to it.’ And here I was, someone who would watch 4- 5 movies a day, religiously attend film festivals and was hyper- passionate about movies.”

Ennu Ninte Moideen has grossed over 27 crores and is among the biggest hits that the Malayalam cinema has seen this year. So what were his preparations for this period film? “On reading the script, I was ready to do anything to get into the role. The director wanted me to look like a footballer, which meant cutting down on weight. I also had to work on enacting the mannerisms and body language of someone who lived half a century ago. Topping the whole preparation for the role was the pencil mustache. I didn’t want to stick a fake one and chose to grow one instead. As luck would have it, I also got married during the same period and my wedding album has me donning the 1960s look.”

So how is he handling stardom? There is no stardom, he tells us.” I have shared screen space with some of the biggest actors in the industry like Mohanlal and Prithviraj. But once I am off the location- it’s the same old me.” He also narrates a funny incident at the sets of Koothara where he costarred with Mohanlal. A couple on a bike stops at the shoot location to see what is going on. The wife says.” Chetta, It’s a shoot.” The husband gives Tovino a long, hard stare as he comes out his caravan and then announces, “It’s a TV serial shoot.” We burst out laughing. Yes, with all the different looks and appearances that he has sported in his movies, it could be quite hard to spot the real Tovino. Well, he could actually rap about that if he wanted to. Who doesn’t love a sport? We adore them, especially if we are shooting one. Celebrities who don’t fuss over superfluous ideas like the image or get cranky and create a ruckus about the things as tiny as the wrong sauce in a chicken sandwich. Tovino was definitely not one of them. A sport if there ever was one; we were only too happy to discover that his versatility was not limited to his choice of roles and extended to our shoot as well. He played the mafiaso with gusto, looking every bit like a member of the Don Corleone clan and was equally at home pulling off a Bach with the Piano. And what is more, he even played a piece for us on the piano. And it was not bad. No, really, it was sufferable. Asking actors if they would want to turn directors is almost a natural question. But when the question is posed to someone who has been involved in filmmaking, it makes more sense. So wouldn’t the assistant director of Theevram want to don the director’s hat one day? “Yes, one day,” he says, “but right now I am too busy being an actor.” Aah, can we now say we know TovIno. We don’t know.
