Following a month long, multiple outlet bidding tussle, Amy Powell-led Paramount Television and frequent collaborator Anonymous Content have landed the rights to Shantaram, the best-selling novel from author Gregory David Roberts. They have also struck a deal for Roberts’s follow-up novel, The Mountain Shadow. The drama series is produced by Anonymous’ Steve Golin, and Nicole Clemens, while Andrea Barron will be one of the executive producers.

Set in the 1970s, Shantaram chronicles the story of Lin, a writer turned bank robber who escapes a maximum security Australian prison and flees to Bombay. Changing his name to Shantaram, Lin learns Marathi and reinvents himself as a doctor who looks after the residents of the slum where he lives. Burning slums and shabby hotels, romantic love and prison anguish, criminal wars and Bollywood films, Mumbai Mafia, spiritual gurus and mujaheddin guerrillas—this huge novel has the world of human experience in its reach, and a passionate love for India at its heart. Based on the author’s personal experiences, it is by any measure an extraordinary voice in the world of literature.  Shantaram has been published in 39 languages in 42 territories worldwide and has sold more than 6 million copies.

The novel was previously set to be adapted as a feature film by Johnny Depp, featuring Mira Nair as the director, Joel Edgerton in the lead, and Roberts writing the screenplay, but somehow the production went nowhere.

Talking about the same to Variety magazine, author Gregory David Roberts said, “I’m honoured and humbled in equal measure as a writer, and thrilled for the many readers who have hoped that Shantaram would become a vivid screen experience. Television is the perfect medium for the novel, and Steve Golin and Nicole Clemens at Anonymous Content are the perfect partners.”

Books are considered to be a person’s best friend. It does everything that you’d expect your best friend to do. It tells you stories about the people that you might have once heard about or stories about a complete stranger. While it lets you experience different emotions and lets you walk alongside with the characters of the story, it sometimes lets you want to be the character. So, taking this into account, let’s explore five books written by Indian authors that are a must read.

A God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy

Set in the backdrops of a small village in Kerala, it is a story about the childhood experience of fraternal twins. With a few unfortunate turn of events, their lives completely changed and took a detour.

This was Roy’s debut novel and was published in the year 1996, making it one of the all-time favorites of the readers. In 1997, The God of Small Things won the Man Booker Prize for Fiction and was listed as one of the New York Times Notable Books of the Year.

The Palace of Illusions: A Novel by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni

Have you wondered what if Mahabharata, the Sanskrit epic of ancient India was retold from a woman’s perspective? Well, The Palace of Illusions: A Novel is an execution of Hindu epic Mahabharata from Draupadi’s viewpoint, namely, that of a woman living in a patriarchal world.

A book that captured the true emotions of Draupadi, it was critically acclaimed by many with positive reviews. The novel written by the award-winning Indian-American author and poet, this is considered to be one of the finest works by the author.

Looking for a twist in the plot and a different perspective, you know where to lay your hands.

Nacropolis by Jeet Thayil

Set in the 1970s Old Bombay, Narcopolis tells the story about the city of intoxication, intoxicated in the influence of opium. The novel draws on his own experiences as a drug addict, but the story expands with characters that are closely associated with the drug scene of the city.

As a novel that took the author five years to write, this book was nominated for Man Booker Prize in 2012. As a book that talks about the darkest side of the drug scene in a city, some might find depressing and some exciting. But it’s worth a read.

Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur

Written by Rupi Kaur, an Indo-Canadian poet and illustrator, this book is a collection of poetry, prose and hand-drawn illustrations dealing with themes of violence, abuse, love, loss, and feminism.

Critically appreciated by all around the world, the book topped the New York Times bestsellers list and remained on it for 52 consecutive weeks. While emotions are a thing for all the readers, Milk and Honey will make you experience all kinds of emotions, empowering you to do things that you haven’t do before.

Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie

A recipient of Man Booker Prize 1981, the story is set in the context of actual historical events. The story told by Saleem Sinai, the chief protagonist was born in the midnight of the independence of India and the partition of British India.

Written by Sir Ahmed Salman Rushdie, a British Indian novelist, and essayist, this novel is considered as an example of postcolonial, postmodern and magical realist literature. The voyage from Nalapat Kamala to Kamala Surayya

Published

Aami, the woman who explored the real her

Google is honoring Kamala Surayya with a doodle apropos the date of publication of her autobiography ‘My Story’. It was first published in Malayalam as Ente Katha on February 1, 1973, which has fetched much controversy for writing about her sexual desires, abuse, social norms and extramarital affairs etc. In a blog post, Google stated that “the work she left behind, provides a window into the world of an engrossing woman”. The honor will be elevated when the movie on her – which is currently in the making – is released.

Kamala Surrayya, popularly known by her pen name ‘Madhavikutty’, is a bilingual poetess, author, and painter from Kerala. She comes from a family of writers, the Nalapat family, where her mother Balamani Amma and her maternal great-uncle Nalapat Narayana Menon are renowned authors. She has bagged the Sahitya Akademi award and many literary awards such as the Asian World Prize, Kent award and Ezhuthachan Puraskaram. She changed her religion to Islam, which brewed more controversies and changed her name from Kamala Das to Kamala Surrayya.

The burning charisma of Madhavikutty becomes all the more spectacular on the big screen. Aami, an upcoming Kamal movie has released its first video song on Youtube. The song ‘Neermathala poovinullile’ has portrayed the transformations of Madhavikutty from her childhood. The poem emphasizes the tree known as the ‘Three Leaved Caper’, which plays a significant role throughout her life. A follow shot where little Kamala looks through the rear window of the car, the Illam getting far away from her is highly symbolic.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNEUELnRlzc

The social circumstances of the age, the lack of a social life for women outside the Illam and hopes of Kamala is beautifully communicated in a single scene. The beautiful frames of Madhu Neelakandan have given life to the song. Madhavikutty as a writer, painter, and enthusiast of nature is beautifully visualized. Her wide aspects of sexuality is discussed throughout the song. Manju Warrier’s unquestionable resemblance, Bijibal’s music, and Shreya Ghoshal’s vocals have created magic with the song. The song reassures the hope for the movie in spite of all the controversies.

10 years of ‘The Book Thief’ and here are 10 things that you need to know

Published

on

10 years and we still cannot get over with the characters of ‘The Book Thief’. Here are few interesting facts about the Book Thief

The book is about Nazi Germany during World War 2 written by Australian author Markus Zusak, who wrote this      masterpiece back in 2005

Markus Zusak rewrote the book 200 times because he believed it made the writing stronger.

It took him 3 years to complete the book and 7 years to get it published.

At the age of 16, The Old Man and the Sea and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape inspired him to be an author.

The author wrote the book for himself. He did not have an intention to publish it, as he thought no one else would read it.

The Book thief taught us about love and relationships between you and your loved ones through Papa, Liesel, Mama and Rudy and of course, Max!

The book remained on the New York Times bestseller list for 230 weeks and the movie was nominated for the Oscars.

Mark Zusak’s favorite character is Rudy Steiner. He loved the character, especially the part where he paints himself with Charcoal to resemble Jesse Owens.

Many of the incidents in the book was a real-life inspiration. Few situations that the author’s mother had faced in her childhood inspired him to write similar situations for the book.

Mark Zusak, the author of The Book Thief, has just one advice for the young writers; Let failure be your best friend.

If you are in Kochi today, then do drop in at Mamangam to celebrate a decade of The Book Thief.
