Our ‘Children’s Day’ Movie Picks

Published

on

This Children’s Day here’s a list of movies that you can watch with your children or in the company of your own inner child

As children who were born in the booming era of the television – or the ‘idiot box’ as my mother calls it – we have had the privilege of watching some very beautifully and painstakingly made animated movies over the years.  We’ve seen them all and for most of these movies, we’ve seen them numerous times and some of them taught us lessons that we’ve carried with us for life. So this children’s day we thought we’d revisit some of our favourite and a few classic animated movies of all time. Here’s a list of our 14 best picks (in no specific order) that you can revisit this Children’s Day along with your children, or just in the company of your own inner child.

1.Lion King

Released in: 1994
What we love: One of the biggest success stories in the world of animated films, we love this one for the beautiful story line and the characters, all of whom have made a lasting impression and many of which we are still very much in love with. Timon and Pumba were the real #freindshipgoals

2.Up

Released in: 2009
What we love: Not only did Mr. Fredricksen’s beautiful love story leave us in tears, the bond he forges with Russel and the adventure they embark upon truly warmed our hearts. We loved this movie so much we have a jar in our home that says ‘Paradise Falls’. Also, can we have talking dog too?

3.Megamind

Released in: 2010
What we love: The humour that had us rolling on the floor in laughter (and using the same lame jokes in our own conversations) but more importantly the story itself. Good always triumphs evil in most fairy tales and movies but Megamind showed us that everyone is capable of good, and the bad guy can get the girl too.

4.WALL-E

Released in: 2008
What we love: We never thought we’d fall in love with little machines the way we fell in love with WALL-E and Eve. A story set in the future with these two little robots and their remarkable love story and their adventure to save the world, never in our wildest dreams would we ever think that we’d be tearing up over a robot falling in love. Way to go Pixar!

5.Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Released in: 1937
What we love: This oldie is a real goldie. One of the earliest Disney princesses to sing and dance and prance her way into our lives, Snow White was one of our childhood favourites. The seven dwarfs with names that matched their persona’s added to the ‘awwwww’ factor of the movie. We’ve seen this movie more than a dozen times already but we could still watch it again.

6.Kung Fu Panda

Released in: 2008
What we love: Po showed us all that heroes come in all shapes and sizes and that the secret ingredient to success is within oneself. We’ll admit, we all began practising our Kung Fu moves after watching this one. Also, Master Oogway is the coolest turtle ever. His words of wisdom, that according to legend, is legendary. Pass me the dumplings and the noodle soup, please.

7.Ice Age

Released in: 2002
What we love: If you’ve never seen this movie and we told you that we watched a movie about a sloth, a mammoth and a sabre-tooth tiger who were a friend, you’d call us crazy. Manny, Diego and Sid might be one of the strangest herds we’ve ever seen but they sure make a great team. Where’s the babyyy?? THERE HE IS!!!

8.Despicable Me

Released in: 2010
What we love: Agnes may love unicorns but we love her!!!! We also love how three little adorable orphans turn super-villain Gru’s world upside down. Steve Carrell absolutely nails his role as Gru. Also, one of the biggest highlights of the movie is Gru’s little yellow minions who speak their weird language and made us wish that we all had one of them in our life. ‘Unicorns I love them… Unicorns I love them… Uni uni corns…. I laa aav them…’

9.Bambi

Released in: 1942
What we love: We really got the feels after watching this movie. This little deer strolled into our hearts all these years ago. There’s one scene in this movie that has managed to haunt us and still make us tear up to date. I mean, admit it, we all cried when (**spoiler alert**) Bambi’s mother died.

10.Frozen

Released in: 2013
What we love: Do you wanna build a snowman? Elsa and Anna taught us that blood is thicker than water (and can melt ice any day) A bit of a twist in terms of the usual Disney movie (that finally redefined the typical Disney princess and her character), Frozen had us all sauntering around signing ‘Let it gooooooooooooooo… Let it gooooooooo…..’

11.Brave

Released in: 2012
What we love: We are suckers for the ‘not-your-typical-princess’ movie and this is definitely one of them. Thankfully this has NOTHING  to do with falling in love, but rather about the bonds of family. We love Merida her three little brothers and her beautiful Scottish accent.  Pass me the arrows, lad!

12.Jungle Book

Released in: 1967
What we love: How Mowgli taught us about what man’s relationship to nature ought to be. The boy who was raised by wolves seems more civilized than us in that sense. We also love Bagheera and Balu and if you think about it, we all have one friend with the characteristics of either of these two characters. The tunes are still stuck in our head and at the end of the month, we begin singing  ‘Look for the…’bear’ necessities…

13.Toy Story

Released in: 1995
What we love: We love the idea that toys can come to life and live very amazing lives of their own. Just perfect. Script, character, animation….this manages to break free of the yoke of ‘children’s movie’ to simply be one of the best movies of the 90’s. There’s plenty of cleverness throughout this film, and the story keeps moving at a great pace; there’s truly never a dull moment in these toys’ lives.

14.Inside Out

Released in: 2015
What we love: We loveeee Joy and Sadness and their beautiful adventure. It’s nice to see a visual representation of what goes on inside our heads on a daily basis and what makes us do the things we do. Pixar really hits a home run with this one. Also, though his role was very minimal during the course of the movie we couldn’t help but fall in love with Bing Bong, especially when he tells Joy ‘Take her to the moon for me!’. I legit cried.

Dhanush To Star In The Tamil Adaptation Of Akshay Kumar’s Padman

The real Padman Arunachalam Muruganantham wants Dhanush to play Akshay Kumar’s role in the Tamil remake of the movie

Text Credits: Shibul Pavithran

Akshay Kumar’s latest release PadMan is doing great business at the box office. The movie has been getting highly positive reviews by the critics received and the common audience. Although the movie is facing some issues in the Arab countries, the movie has released in all places, except Pakistan. It’s a great achievement in itself to see the success of such a daring story line. The movie is inspired from the real life story of Arunachalam Muruganandam, what started as a simple quest to ensure proper menstrual health for his wife Shanthi, turned into a revolution of sorts for rural women. His low-cost sanitary pads provided a cheap and healthy alternative to the dirty rags, sand bags and what not that were being used for ages by menstruating women, directed by R. Balki.

Akshay Kumar played Arunachalam’s role but the movie was set in Madhya Pradesh. The makers chose Madhya Pradesh as the location as they felt the need to address such a critical issue was more relevant in a backward state. The real life Padman Arunachalam was asked by many about why he let the movie to be made in Hindi and not in his own language. While there is no doubt that Akshay Kumar gave his heart and soul to the character, Arunachalam Muruganandam feels Dhanush would be the ideal choice to play him if his story ever gets made in Tamil. Speaking at a special screening of the film last week in Chennai, Muruganantham said it’d be nice if Dhanush featured in the Tamil version of his story.

Arunachalam felt that the story and its message would reach to more people only if it was made in Bollywood. Akshay Kumar is a big star and the movie naturally reached out to a wide audience.

It will be very interesting if such a remake really materializes. Like Akshay, Dhanush is also a fabulous Actor and he will try to give his best for the movie. It’ll be interesting to see if Dhanush would accept the role if he’s approached with an offer. It’d be brave of him accept the offer given that it’s a very unconventional role.

Dhanush is currently busy shooting for Maari 2, in which he returns as local rowdy – sporting John Lennon-like shades, wearing dhoti and twirled mustache; Dhanush also awaits the release of Enai Noki Paayum Thota, which marks his maiden collaboration with Gautham Vasudev Menon.
