Some movies don’t do well at the box office but re-watching it again makes you wonder why it didn’t.

We’re all movie buffs somewhere beneath the busy lives we lead that leave us thirsting for a day off. When we finally do get some time for ourselves, there’s a lot to consider as we choose a movie to watch at a theater. We plan out the dates, we check up on the movies, listen to reviews, check the rating online; so much for 2 hours of entertainment!

Yet on a lazy Sunday when we’ve got nothing else to do, we grab a pack of chips, lay back comfortably on the sofa or recliner and watch whatever catches our eye as we skip through the channels on TV. And sometimes, sometimes we come across films that leave us breathless or emotional. We then are forced to wonder why they didn’t do so well at the box office? The thing to consider here is the fact that everybody is different so we might have unique interests that differ from the majority.

Here we have a random list of movies from over the years that we’ve watched and felt were underrated.

Guppy

This one is no surprise. The film has a lot of fans and it’s pretty much awesome with a good story line and amazing acting. It came as a big surprise to me that the film didn’t do that well a the box office. This 2016 film written and directed by Johnpaul George had Chethan Jayalal and Tovino Thomas playing the lead roles. It also had Sreenivasan, Rohini, Sudheer Karamana, Dileesh Pothen and Alencier Ley Lopez in other prominent roles.

Leela

I remember when a friend of mine asked me if I had watched the film Leela yet. I hadn’t. It was a pretty decent adaptation of a short story of the same name by Unni R, which may be why it received the backlash it did. This 2016 release directed and produced by Ranjith starred Biju Menon in the lead role, while Vijayaraghavan, Suresh Krishna, Indrans, Sudheer Karamana, Parvathy Nambiar, Jagadish, and Priyanka acted in supporting roles.

Devadoothan

Released in the year 2000, this Sibi Malayil movie did not do well at the box office. Even though it had a stellar cast that included Mohanlal, Jayaprada and Vineeth, it couldn’t create the necessary hype to make it a hit. Personally, the movie has always been a favorite of mine. I liked the supernatural elements and the mystery behind everything. Not to mention, the songs were quite catchy!

KL 10 Patthu

This sweet rom-com was written and directed by debutant director Muhsin Parari. It had Unni Mukundan and Chandini Sreedharan in the lead along with along with Saiju Kurup, Aju Varghese and Sreenath Bhasi in supporting roles. Now this one was a suggestion by a friend, and I quite enjoyed watching this one more so than many ‘commercial hits’ that came out around the time. Hence it’s on the list.

Guru

I had to mention this one. This 1997 film was way ahead of its time. A fantasy film directed by Rajiv Anchal, this film tanked at the box office though it went on to become India’s official nomination for the Academy Awards! This one is definitely worth the watch for its hidden depth and creativity. The movie had Mohanlal in the lead with Nedumudi Venu, Srinivasan, Suresh Gopi, Sithara, Kaveri Muralidharan and Sreelakshmi in supporting roles.
