CHAI TO THAI – Travel Diaries

Published

on

Thai food fwd life

It’s ‘Thai’ time, you realize Thailand goes beyond the glistening beaches and full moon parties.

I’ve always felt that packaged deals have been as trivial as those combos of miniscule buns, over salty fries and yes water loaded Pepsis. When I graduated from college, the travel menu was tossed at me,“ Would you like the Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore package?” I immediately envisioned myself as the traveler, who’ll have an alarm set to not miss the breakfast buffet, fighting in a van for the best seats and listening to the travel guide’s monotonous tone. I gave a ghastly face and those mean thumbs down you do at auditions.

The Combo Denial

Now, why did I settle for Thailand? Away from the One Night in Bangkok song and yes the hyped bachelorette destination, Thailand is a beautiful place just to have a breakaway. It’s not a country that screams out,“Follow a vacation protocol, first timers!” I personally feel, when you come back from Thailand people wouldn’t ask, “You did not go to the floating market or the temples or even Alcazar?” Contrary to visiting China, they bellow, “ You missed the Great Wall?” I think, when I traveled to Thailand without a bucket list and an itinerary, I realized your bare neccessites are a visa on arrival and a genuine passport. I knew things were going to get funny when I stepped out of the airport. Without a tour guide or any apps, I just meandered in a new city and ended up stumbling across many instances.

baloon fwd life

Pattaya it Is

My first stop was Pattaya. At the very nocturnal city, I landed at the Walking Street that has an insane amount of lights and posters, more loaded than a Broadway star’s dressing room. I thought if Times Square had a bombardment of ads, then Thailand was a lot more eye-catching in many ways, such as strips clubs named as Why Not to special drinks called Sh*t on Grass. And since there’s a massage parlor around the corner of every street, there were always quirky lines that would have had every copywriter rolling with laughter – ingenious indeed. Despite the boisterous music, clothes that simplified the string theory and very ‘welcoming’ hosts, there was still some space for a clear mind. But despite a little clarity, I happened to be very lost. I jumped on to a tuktuk. I think the only thing I could tell the driver, “ Could you just drop me the last stop? “ He didn’t mind, he chatted away, “ Did you check out the cabaret performance at Alcazar?” Okay, the first recommendation that was duly enjoyed. But what truly got me tickled where all the puns that came to shore at Jomiten Beach. Unlike your photoshopped images of pristine blue waters, things were literally crystal clear.

Going Underwhy not fwd life

For anyone who thinks they are too cool for school, they did not hang around with the school of nerdy Powder Blue Surgeon fishes. I walked under the sea with a fish bowl on my head. It’s quite funny; it felt like role reversal. Sarcastically I believe, the scuba diving assistant laughed at the joke. After I had a fantastic swim, I asked one of the many tour guides where I could have some good lunch. He smiled, “ Would you like to eat in a seven-star restaurant.” I was partially skeptical, but then on a boat and across the blue sea of Jomiten Beach, I was welcomed by the view of a large restaurant named Seven Star. That’s certainly a fresh serving of humor.

Two Nights in Bangkok (didn’t make me humble)

Bangkok, on the other hand, was the epitome of city life. In the morning take a long walk to China town and be an expert in haggling, there’s no point blurting prices, you have a knockout session with calculators. Just like an intense game of ping pong, the calculator’s screen is in a frenzy with numbers between you and the vendors. In between all the rush, you can go for those intense bike rides that offer taxi services. Just do not land in surprise taxi drive- they take you take to the Gem Gallery – it’s a commission thing.

Shop till you Drop ( the weight)

smilling fwd life

Secretly, Thailand was also a destination for shopping. And though I tried to fight stereotypes, I think they stood by the phrase it’s a ‘small world’. Half of the time I ferreted through the collections, most of the flea markets never went beyond a size four. I think when I successfully fit into a size eight skirt, the woman gave a slow-motioned clap, “ You fit, even when you big.” Imagine not throwing a fit while’fitting in’ in a fitting room. I definitely recommend the street food, learn three words, Tom Yam Yung – the other three words will follow. If you are looking for a fruitful experience, settle for some very deceivingly prickly but innocuous rambutan and yes kindly do not juggle some durians in your luggage. The story behind a durian is well explained if you ask any hotel manager. Ask when you are taking a leave, or the bellboy may be slightly curious. At night, Bangkok is beautifully ridden with traffic, your walk on the tall bridges makes you look like you are soaring over lanterns of machinated match boxes. Stop by any bar, and attempt karaoke and if there aren’t any English songs, say ‘chai’ (yes) to some Thai. I’ve been there and crooned that. Being lost in vacation is quite a deal if you dig the ‘lost in translation’ experience. You truly understand that being immersed in absolutely something unplanned is where spontaneity’s raised to infinity.

GETTING AROUND

(A pocketful of Thai Phrases)
Sawatdee (krub/kah) Hello
Sabai dee ru (krub/kah) How are you?
Sabai dee (krub/kah) Fine
Khob Khun (kup/kaa) Thank you
