Takeshi Murakami

With an explosive style, Takeshi is known for his ecstatic frenzy of colours. He drew similarities between Japanese painting, anime (animation) and manga (comics) and eschewed it with two-dimensional bold striking imagery which led to the post-modern ‘Superflat’ movement. It refers to various flattened forms in Japanese graphic art, animation, pop culture and fine arts, as well as, what the designer believes to be a ‘shallow emptiness of Japanese consumer culture.’ With his famous cult status in Japan, he was approached in 2002 to design a line of handbags for Louis Vuitt which earned him plenty of fanfare and fascination the world over,

As inspirational as his art was, Pablo Picasso had a fascination for lines. But for the man whose ideas revolutionised art, he never really experimented unlike the other greats like Dali with the twirled moustaches or Duchamp’s exquisite suits. His cubist ideas somehow seemed to have refrained from finding its way into his personal style. He shifted from his prim ties and waistcoats to something minimal and instinctive – contrary to his artwork. Letting his masterpieces take up all the spotlight, Picasso was always humble in his appearance and preferred wearing simple striped shorts, trousers and his trademark hats.

Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo

In the 1930’s, Frida Kahlo was as distinctive as her art. She painted self-portraits seen as whimsical, but not exaggerated. With her dark hair piled on top of her head, clusters of flowers, an untamed unibrow, and a mustache that she intentionally darkened, she was a rebel. Tweaking the attire from Mexico’s matriarchal Tehuantepec area, she wore corset-style bodices and long flowing skirts that covered a lot of her scars. After being paralysed, she became gutted to prove nothing could stop her from expressing herself, and following an amputation, she wore a prosthetic leg with a red embroidered boot with a bell on the laces. Fashion to her was something to monkey around with, literally.

Though American artist Georgia O’Keeffe’s work was effeminate with the complimentary hues of flowers, her strength was mirrored in her personal style. She had an elegantly monastic (characteristic of a secluded, dedicated, or austere manner of living) and androgynous (having the characteristics or nature of both male and female) style that revealed some of her Southwestern spirits. Georgia read voraciously and ever since stumbling upon Charlotte Perkins Gilman in 1950, clothes became a freedom of movement and her aesthetic expression and usually caught in a white shirt, men’s shoes and Parson’s hat, clothes of no waistline.
